"senseless; impractical; totally unsound"
"intensely enthusiastic; passionately excited"
"very enamored or infatuated"
I was thinking about it recently, and many aspects and truths of Christianity are seemingly crazy. I can understand why there are so many people who genuinely don't get it, and genuinely think that Christians are nuts. I mean, seriously, while Christianity is sound, and can be proven logically, a lot of the truths seem illogical and insane until they are experienced.
Here are just a few that I have found to be true, but sound insane.
- If your budget is tight and you are running low on money, make sure to tithe at least 10% of everything to make sure you will have enough for everything you need.
- If your day is jam packed and you don't have enough time to get everything done, spend a good amount of unrushed, uninterrupted time studying God's Word and praying, and everything else will start to fall into place and your stress level will go down.
- When someone is mean to you, you should be extra nice to them. You should love, pray for, and care for your enemies.
These are just a small few of the things that Jesus teaches that seem absolutely crazy, but work. It got me thinking about something. Often, the geniuses of the world, those who are far more intelligent than you or I could ever imagine being, seem absolutely crazy. The things they say and teach do not make sense, they are ridiculed or rejected, and often, it is not until much later that it is realized and accepted that they were right.
This is the case with God, with Christianity. The wisdom of God seems absolutely ridiculous, senseless, unsound, etc... Yet, it is genius.
"18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but it is God’s power to us who are being saved. 19 For it is written:
I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and I will set aside the understanding of the experts.
and I will set aside the understanding of the experts.
20 Where is the philosopher? Where is the scholar? Where is the debater of this age? Hasn’t God made the world’s wisdom foolish? 21 For since, in God’s wisdom, the world did not know God through wisdom, God was pleased to save those who believe through the foolishness of the message preached. 22 For the Jews ask for signs and the Greeks seek wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles. 24 Yet to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is God’s power and God’s wisdom, 25 because God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.
26 Brothers, consider your calling: Not many are wise from a human perspective, not many powerful, not many of noble birth. 27 Instead, God has chosen what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen what is weak in the world to shame the strong. 28 God has chosen what is insignificant and despised in the world —what is viewed as nothing—to bring to nothing what is viewed as something, 29 so that no one can boast in His presence. 30 But it is from Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became God-given wisdom for us—our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption, 31 in order that, as it is written: The one who boasts must boast in the Lord."
-- 1 Corinthians 1:18-31
The things of God, the wisdom of God, seems crazy, yet it is actually more wise than the wisest earthly scholar. One day, everyone will see the truth of God and realize that everything we held as valuable and wise from a human perspective is, in fact, itself, crazy and foolish. However, I would encourage you not to wait.
Take the opportunity today to join with God in this crazy wisdom, and don't just do it half-heartedly. The other definitions of crazy are:
"intensely enthusiastic; passionately excited"
"very enamored or infatuated"
We, as Christians should be "passionately excited" about God, about His love, about His Truth, about His Word. We should be infatuated with Him! It is only in this endeavor, this passionate pursuit of God, and passionate abandon to His "foolishness," which is "wiser than human wisdom" that you will find your ultimate purpose and meaning, and find the answers that so many attempt to find through the pursuit of wisdom.
So let's be crazy Christians!
