Happy Pi Day!
Today is such a strange “holiday." It's a day to commemorate the mysterious number known as pi. 3.14, except it's not 3.14. It's 3.14159265, but actually, it's more, much more. It's an endless number, an infinite string of digits, never ending, never repeating, never falling into a pattern. The number of calculated digits of pi currently stands at 202.11229 trillion. That's an incomprehensible number of digits, yet, it's no closer to the full truth of the number than 3.14.Pi is not only mysterious for its infinite nature, it is also an incredibly important number in our world. It is found in, and plays an integral role in, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, physics, astronomy, statistics, and biology. It's part of things like heartbeats, circadian rhythm, breathing cycles, and even the stripes on zebras. It even helps us understand DNA.
It's infinite, never repeating and constant. It's a part of, essentially, everything in the world. It's a key that unlocks wisdom and understanding in the world. It's taught to children in grade school and it's unknown by the greatest, smartest scientific minds in the world.
As I was thinking about this I realized that this is a lot like God. God is a part of absolutely everything in the world. He is integral to everything from history to science to art to morality.
Colossians 1:16-17
“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
God is the ultimate creator of absolutely everything we see and experience in the world. His fingerprint is on everything from the oceans to the flocks of geese flying through the air to every human soul. Just as pi is an integral constant to the universe, God is an integral constant that holds everything together.
God is also an unknowable known. He is infinite, and it is utterly impossible to fully know God, every characteristic and quality and aspect of Him, yet He makes Himself accessible. He is taught to toddlers and school children, but the most brilliant theologians, with thousands of years of study, haven't even scratched the surface of the depth of who He is.
Acts 17:24-28
“The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for “‘In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said, “‘For we are indeed his offspring.’”
God gives us breath and the life of a beating heart. He knows when we sleep and when we wake. He knows every hair on our head and every stripe on every zebra. He knit our DNA together. He is in everything. He made everything. He knows everything. So the next time you think about pi, think about God.
